Dry van is the backbone of North American freight. Most brokers start their careers quoting dry van loads, and most never stop — it's the most available equipment type, the most carrier options, and the most common freight on the road. But "dry van" is not a single fixed spec. Dimensions vary by age of equipment, payloads vary by commodity density, and not every dry van carrier has the same dock-access capability. This guide covers the rules, specs, and planning logic you need to quote dry van loads accurately.

What Is a Dry Van Trailer?

A dry van is a fully enclosed, weathertight trailer with a solid roof, four walls, and a swing or roll-up rear door. It protects freight from rain, wind, and road debris without active temperature control. Freight is loaded from the rear and sits on the trailer floor or on pallets. Dry van is the default equipment type for general freight — if it doesn't need temperature control, open-deck loading, or oversized handling, it probably moves in a dry van.

Note Dry van does not provide any temperature regulation. If a shipper says "keep it away from extreme heat or cold" but the freight has no specific temperature range, that's still a dry van load. If the freight has a stated temperature window (e.g., 34°F–41°F), it needs a reefer.

The 53-foot trailer is the industry standard for long-haul dry van freight in North America. 48-foot trailers still exist — mostly on regional routes and with older private fleets — but if you're asking a carrier for a dry van without specifying length, they'll almost always send a 53.

Weight Limits and Legal Maximums

The U.S. federal gross vehicle weight limit is 80,000 lbs. A standard tractor-trailer combination weighs approximately 33,000–35,000 lbs empty, leaving roughly 44,000–47,000 lbs of net payload capacity. In Canada, federal limits allow up to 62,500 kg (137,788 lbs) under the National Safety Code, but provincial maximums and bridge formulas vary significantly by province and route.

Cube vs. Weight: Which Constraint Hits First?

Every dry van load is constrained by one of two things: volume (the trailer fills up before it hits max weight) or weight (the trailer reaches its legal limit before it's physically full). Knowing which constraint applies tells you whether the carrier will be able to take an add-on stop and whether you're pricing on a per-pallet or per-pound basis.

A quick way to estimate: multiply the number of pallets by the average pallet weight. If 26 pallets × 1,800 lbs = 46,800 lbs and the trailer holds 30 pallets, the load is weight-constrained. The carrier can't add a stop. If 30 pallets × 800 lbs = 24,000 lbs, the trailer cubed out — weight is not the issue.

Tip When a shipper says "we have a full truckload," always ask for the actual weight and pallet count. Shippers routinely call a 20-pallet, 42,000-lb load a "full truck" when it still has 10 pallet positions and 2,000 lbs available. That's a pricing conversation.

Pallet Standards and Floor Loading

Most dry van freight moves on GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) standard pallets: 48 inches × 40 inches. A 53-foot trailer fits two 48×40 pallets side by side (40+40 = 80 inches across the 98-inch interior), 13 rows deep, for a maximum of 26 double-stacked pallet positions — though most loads run 24–26 depending on pallet overhang.

Some loads are floor-loaded (no pallets) — merchandise shipped loose into the trailer and stacked from floor to ceiling. Floor loading maximizes space but requires manual unloading (lumper labor), increases damage risk, and extends unload time significantly. When quoting floor-loaded shipments, confirm lumper cost responsibility with the shipper.

Load Securement Requirements

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations (49 CFR Part 393) require that all cargo be properly secured before movement. For dry van freight, the primary securement methods are blocking and bracing built into the load configuration, and the trailer walls and bulkhead providing lateral restraint. Because most dry van freight is palletized and stacked to the walls, the securement obligation largely falls on the shipper's load plan — but the carrier is responsible for confirming the load is secure before departure.

Dry van trailers require a dock-height loading facility — the trailer door sill sits approximately 48–52 inches above the ground, which aligns with standard loading dock height. If a shipper or consignee does not have a dock, the load requires a liftgate trailer, a forklift at ground level, or drop-and-hook.

Always confirm dock access before booking. A carrier who shows up to a residential delivery expecting a dock and finds stairs will either refuse the load or charge a significant service fee. Dry van is the most versatile trailer type, but it has clear limits. Knowing what it cannot handle prevents you from misquoting a load and booking the wrong equipment.

Common Dry Van Quoting Mistakes

Most mistakes on dry van loads happen during the quoting conversation with the shipper. Getting these wrong costs you either a failed load or an angry carrier.

  • Not confirming actual weight — "it's a full truckload" is not a weight
  • Not confirming pallet count and stackability — affects whether the carrier can take an add-on
  • Assuming dock-high when the pickup is an industrial yard or residential address
  • Forgetting to ask about hazmat — even one pallet of hazmat can change the carrier requirements
  • Not asking about load time — a 4-hour live load means detention, which means a higher carrier rate
  • Quoting based on the shipper's transit expectation without checking carrier availability for that lane
  • Booking a standard dry van for frozen freight because "it's only going a few hours" — no, it still needs a reefer

  1. Commodity — what exactly is moving and does it have any special handling needs?
  2. Weight — actual gross weight in pounds, not "a full truck"
  3. Pallet count and dimensions — are they GMA standard? Are they stackable?
  4. Dock access at origin and destination — dock-high or ground level?
  5. Liftgate required? — if yes, confirm the carrier has one available
  6. Load type — live load, drop-and-hook, or floor-loaded?
